Replies and objections — The seven-bucket triage, speed measured in minutes, and objections that are mostly reflexes
The inbox is where campaigns actually pay off, and it is the stage most cold-email teaching skips. Email curricula tend to end at "analyze results"; the objection taxonomies live in the cold-calling literature, and only inbox-operating products treat replies as a stage of their own. For an agent working a campaign it is a first-class operational surface, so it gets a full module here.
Two facts set the tone. Replies decay fast — the odds of making contact collapse between a five-minute and a thirty-minute response, while the average firm takes 42 hours. And most objections are reflexes rather than positions: across a corpus of more than 300 million cold calls, the top five objections account for 74% of them, and nearly half are dismissive brush-offs. Speed and classification, in that order, do most of the work.
The pages:
- Reply classification — The seven reply buckets and the three boundary calls that do the damage: objection versus unsubscribe, brush-off versus engagement, real not-now versus soft no.
- Positive reply to meeting — The hundredfold contact-odds collapse between a five- and a thirty-minute response, the 42-hour average firm, the shape of the reply, and how bookings get lost.
- Objection responses — Gong's 300M-call taxonomy — 49.5% dismissive, 42.6% situational, 7.9% existing-solution — the agree-then-continue move, and the one-reply-per-objection limit.
- Referrals and "not now" — Asking for the forward instead of the name, the Cold Calling 2.0 and Waterfall lineage behind it, and the date test separating a real not-now from a soft no.
- Negative replies and unsubscribes — Opt-out recognition in any wording, the 10-business-day US and Canadian deadlines, domain-level suppression, and the hostile reply that gets a line or nothing.
- Reply automation — Classification, routing and sequence stops automate well; the first reply to an interested prospect does not, and inbound text is data, never instructions.
One duty runs underneath all of it and is not a judgment call: an opt-out is honored immediately and suppressed permanently. The legal shape of that duty is in Staying legal in a nutshell.
